유엔해양법협약 제98조(지원제공의무)

1. 모든 국가는 자국국기를 게양한 선박의 선장에 대하여 선박·선원 또는 승객에 대한 중대한 위험이 없는 한 다음 사항을 행하도록 요구한다.
(a) 바다에서 발견된 실종위험이 있는 사람에 대한 지원제공
(b) 지원할 필요가 있다고 통보받은 경우 선장이 그러한 행동을 하리라고 합리적으로 기대되는 한도내에서 가능한 전속력 항진하여 조난자를 구조하는 것
(c) 충돌후 상대선박·선원·승객에 대한 지원제공 및 가능한 경우 자기선박의 명칭·등록항 그리고 가장 가까운 기항예정지를 상대선박에 통보
2. 모든 연안국은 해상안전에 관한 적절하고도 실효적인 수색·구조기관의 설치·운영 및 유지를 촉진시키고, 필요한 경우 이를 위하여 지역약정의 형태로 인접국과 서로 협력한다.

1. Every State shall require the master of a ship flying its flag, in so far as he can do so without serious danger to the ship, the crew or the passengers:

(a) to render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost;

(b) to proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress, if informed of their need of assistance, in so far as such action may reasonably be expected of him;

(c) after a collision, to render assistance to the other ship, its crew and its passengers and, where possible, to inform the other ship of the name of his own ship, its port of registry and the nearest port at which it will call.

2. Every coastal State shall promote the establishment, operation and maintenance of an adequate and effective search and rescue service regarding safety on and over the sea and, where circumstances so require, by way of mutual regional arrangements cooperate with neighbouring States for this purpose.
